We had a great turnout for a lovely winter day at the Homestead. We featured Clarissa Lynch, a 19th century food historian and cook, who cooked “meagre” soup, roast pork and a real fruit cake over an “open pit” fire to show cooking techniques from the 1800’s. Clarissa has a magnetic personality and everyone enjoyed the know-how and stories from Clarissa and her heritage. She has a great cookbook, too! She will be at the Homestead for a spring menu on Saturday, April 7. You don’t want to miss Clarissa!
We provided cotton from our cotton patch and other natural woodsy items for impromptu ornament makings. Cotton boll angels, corn husk angels, and a variety of pinecone wreaths will be adorning many a Christmas tree in the nearby communities. We were lucky to have some awesome volunteers from Russell Middle School—Ella Ramsell, with her sister, Chloe, and Samantha Robinson—who helped with this project and received Beta Club Service hours at the Homestead. Doc was busy in the blacksmith shop with his Christmas Elf-apprentices, making wrought iron creations over the hot forge at the shop. Doc and his helpers are a highlight at the Homestead…their good cheer and historic education delight all ages! Hank Gallups and Robert Dinwiddie were on hand to talk and demonstrate 18th century times…making a natural timeline of living at the William Harris Homestead on December 16, 2017…two hundred years later. Lanier Wheeler is our butter churning expert and is a favorite of us all. He will be on hand for April and for Heritage Day. Join the Lanier Fan Club! Lois and Mike Foerster were busy with weaving in the log house, dressed in period handmade clothing by Lois, our textile expert. She teaches knitting, spinning, weaving, tatting classes at the Homestead…always in high demand. We are lucky to have such a great couple as supporters of our mission at the Homestead. Dixie and Butch, Judy, Janet, Jane, Donna Sue and Dotty rounded out the Victorian Christmas at the Homestead. And always, we love Bo, the Wonder Horse…wonder where he is now…! We also love our traditional sheep…”Sheep in Heavenly Peace” to wish everyone a wonderful and magical Christmas at home and at the William Harris Homestead! **We sincerely apologize for the delay in posting. Our Director of Social Media and Webmaster has been on Medical Leave and is just now catching up. We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused. Thank you.

Donations are tax-deductible and are used to further the mission and vision on the foundation: MISSION The historic William Harris Homestead serves as a cultural and educational center dedicated to the advancement of heritage, agricultural and environmental knowledge. VISION To preserve an early Georgia homestead and provide education and insight into its cultural and historical impact. The Trustees of the William Harris Homestead Foundation, Inc. are pleased to announce that Ms. Dixie Gallups has been hired as Assistant to the Executive Director, as of June, 2017. The William Harris Homestead (circa 1825) is a Georgia historic site, on the National Register of Historic Places, a Walton County Historic Landmark, and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, located at 3636 GA Hwy 11 in Monroe. The historic William Harris Homestead serves as a cultural and educational center dedicated to the advancement of heritage, agricultural, and environmental knowledge. Its vision is to preserve an early Georgia homestead and provide education and insight into its cultural and historical impact. Ms. Gallups grew up in Winder, Georgia. She received her BA in History in 2015 and her Masters in Historic Preservation from the University of Georgia in May, 2017. Dixie is no stranger to the William Harris Homestead. Her parents, Hank and Donna Sue Gallups, began working on preservation projects at the Homestead when Dixie was a little girl, and they encouraged her interest in history and preservation through their commitment to the William Harris Homestead and its history of the nineteenth century. When Dixie was in high school, she began working as a Saturday docent at the Homestead. She served on the Athens Junior Board of the Watson-Brown Foundation, a select group of students, chosen each year, who select local historic sites to receive monetary grants for bricks and mortar projects. Through her participation on the Junior Board and her continued involvement at the Homestead property, she formed a great interest and commitment for historic preservation. Dixie plans to follow the long-term plan of continuing the field trip program, A Day in the 19th Century; providing the property for community events and greenspace for northern Walton County; and increasing awareness of the importance of heritage, agricultural and environmental education. Upon accepting her position, Dixie commented, “I was fortunate enough to be offered a job at the William Harris Homestead that would allow me to combine three of my favorite things: history, preservation, and the William Harris Homestead, and I couldn’t be any luckier or happier.” We believe Dixie is a valuable asset and look forward to her contribution and professional development, as she becomes a key part of the leadership team at the William Harris Homestead Foundation, Inc. Hey…we “Dig” it! After a site visit to the William Harris Homestead, Dr. Jim D’Angelo and Dr. Kathryn Deeley announced that there is much archaeological potential on this historic property. We hope to have a special day this spring for visitors to participate in our surveys. Sharpen your trowels! This is the first of eleven signs produced by the Education Department of the Walton County Soil and Water Conservation District to be installed at the William Harris Homestead. The signs are about farming in Georgia, from a historic perspective to Soil Erosion and Conservation efforts in farming practices. These signs will be placed around the William Harris Homestead to be enjoyed by so many visitors as they visit the farm property. They are educational, informative, and interesting! We are grateful to the Walton County Soil and Water Conservation District folks, and especially to Dan Bennett and Catherine Reuter, who installed the first sign in the pouring rain yesterday.
