​The Trustees of the William Harris Homestead Foundation, Inc. are pleased to announce that Ms. Dixie Gallups has been hired as Assistant to the Executive Director, as of June, 2017.

The William Harris Homestead (circa 1825) is a Georgia historic site, on the National Register of Historic Places, a Walton County Historic Landmark, and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, located at 3636 GA Hwy 11 in Monroe. The historic William Harris Homestead serves as a cultural and educational center dedicated to the advancement of heritage, agricultural, and environmental knowledge. Its vision is to preserve an early Georgia homestead and provide education and insight into its cultural and historical impact.

Ms. Gallups grew up in Winder, Georgia. She received her BA in History in 2015 and her Masters in Historic Preservation from the University of Georgia in May, 2017. Dixie is no stranger to the William Harris Homestead. Her parents, Hank and Donna Sue Gallups, began working on preservation projects at the Homestead when Dixie was a little girl, and they encouraged her interest in history and preservation through their commitment to the William Harris Homestead and its history of the nineteenth century. When Dixie was in high school, she began working as a Saturday docent at the Homestead. She served on the Athens Junior Board of the Watson-Brown Foundation, a select group of students, chosen each year, who select local historic sites to receive monetary grants for bricks and mortar projects. Through her participation on the Junior Board and her continued involvement at the Homestead property, she formed a great interest and commitment for historic preservation.

Dixie plans to follow the long-term plan of continuing the field trip program, A Day in the 19th Century; providing the property for community events and greenspace for northern Walton County; and increasing awareness of the importance of heritage, agricultural and environmental education.

Upon accepting her position, Dixie commented, “I was fortunate enough to be offered a job at the William Harris Homestead that would allow me to combine three of my favorite things: history, preservation, and the William Harris Homestead, and I couldn’t be any luckier or happier.”

We believe Dixie is a valuable asset and look forward to her contribution and professional development, as she becomes a key part of the leadership team at the William Harris Homestead Foundation, Inc.

​Hey…we “Dig” it!

After a site visit to the William Harris Homestead, Dr. Jim D’Angelo and Dr. Kathryn Deeley announced that there is much archaeological potential on this historic property.

Dr. Jim D’Angelo is President and site archaeologist at Fort Daniel Foundation, Inc. in Gwinnett County. Dr. Kathryn Deeley holds a Ph.D in Anthropology. Her research interests include historical archaeology, African-American archaeology, and community outreach and education. She teaches Anthropology at Georgia Gwinnett College.

We began archaeological investigations at the Homestead in June, and we will keep you posted on our first project. Let’s dig together! We hope to have a special day this spring for visitors to participate in our surveys. Sharpen your trowels!

September begins the fall session of A Day in the 19th Century field trip program. Schools from Walton, Barrow, Hall, Fulton, Newton, Oconee, Gwinnett and Jackson Counties will be enjoying and learning about the 1800’s from our enthusiastic and committed staff, who all love history and the Homestead! ​We will present a favorite event on Saturday, November 4, 2017. Georgia Frontier Day will bring the young and the mature to the Homestead for reenactments of life in northeast Georgia, when one depended on survival skills to endure frontier living. Doc will present the history of blacksmithing, and Hank Gallups and Friends will teach about the late 18th century in our area of Georgia, 10 am to 2 pm. Spinning and weaving and other demonstrations and tours of the Homestead will round out an eventful day! Mark your calendar!

​We are booking weddings and events at the William Harris Homestead property for 2018. The Homestead presents a sense of serenity and a spirit of goodness that will be a part of your experience. Let us provide an historic, pastoral setting for your special event.

​We are planning Christmas Holidays at the Homestead. We will decorate for a Victorian Christmas, and hope you will share in the wistful memories of times long ago, celebrating Christmas in the 1800’s. ​Heritage Day…200 Years of Walton County History is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2018. SAVE THE DATE! We will be celebrating the Bicentennial of Walton County, formed from a sale of land from the Muscogee Creek Native American nation in 1818. Please bring your families and friends for this very special day…and volunteer to help in this commemoration of our history in Walton County!
